THE LONG TAIL

THE LONG TAIL

The long tail describes certain business and economic models which can sell a greater volume of otherwise hard to find items at small volumes than of popular items at large volumes. The long tail includes many important factors and relevant facts which have a great influence in actual music and technologic business.

Currently, music industry has suffered a significant recession. In my opinion, it has been produced in certain way because of the high price of Compact disc established by big record discographies.

That fact has also caused a conflict between music industries and free music servers.

Economic disputes between music industries and technology which happened few years ago caused a lot of controversy in music business.

Record industry demanded particular users

of free downloading services like Kaaza therefore these records companies pressed charges against these free services because they violated royalties.

Nowadays, companies like Apple Computer, Microsoft or Buymusic.com have reached an agreement with record discographies in order to offer different alternatives which enable people to download music in a quite cheap way.

On one hand there are people who do not agree with this agreement.

They believe that music should be free for everyone so they do not consider fair to pay anything for downloading music from internet.

On the other hand, there are people who would not mind to pay a reasonable prize for music if they have the opportunity to choose the music the want to listen to. They also demand high quality products and fast services.

Here the triumph of companies like Apple comes. The ways this company work afford the user to have the chance to listen to music that they want to.

Moreover users do not have to pay for the whole CD if they are only interested in a couple of songs. Actually, you only have to pay for the songs you want to download but a very low price.

From my point of view in society today, we are used to listening to a very specific kind of music; we are forced to do it. Powerful companies make people to buy their products. They bombard the user with publicity at every time; they try to make you to listen to a kind of music the more time as possible. This happens also because the lack of media to show all the available contents produced nowadays in which there are a lot of people interested in.

Finally they will make you to like this music, so there will be more people interested in it, therefore they will be able to sell more amounts of products and consequently get more benefits. People accept media

That’s the way new big companies work, they know how to control music business and they do it every day.
